Haunts: 2000

Planning and Set-up:
Set-up

Noticing several long wooden posts along the side of Victor's garage, I wondered if we could use those to somehow hold the fabric up. We agreed that if we could stand the posts upright, it might just provide a framework for the haunt.

I made a quick phone call to my dad and had him bring about 30 large cement blocks and some rope from my house. (Why, you might ask, did I happen to have 30 large cement blocks lying around my house? Since I know some of you are probably wondering, the cement blocks were once used to support shelving units in my garage that had since been dissassembled. In any case, it worked out to be very convenient.)

Post base With unwavering loyalty towards duct tape, we made a test post by sandwiching the wooden pole between two cement blocks and massively duct taping the whole thing together. To our extreme delight (and surprise), this seemed like it would work well enough for our haunt.

We determined where each post would need to be placed, based on the corners of our haunt and where the fabric needed the most support. Then began constructing more posts. In all, we made eleven posts for the haunt.

Victor tests the strength of the post Once we had each of the posts in its position, we needed to hang the fabric. To do this, we first strung ropes between each of the posts. This gave us a wood and rope framework to use. The fabric sheets were hung from the rope, and we stapled or sewed them in place. Nikki and Jon both came over and helped us hang the sheets and sew them together where neccessary.

Most of the fabric was in place by that night, and we had a chance to test Pepper's Ghost and the Projected Light Ghosts before leaving. There was still quite a bit to be done, however, and we continued setting up on Monday and Tuesday after school.

The way Victor's garage opened and closed made it impossible to keep any of the front fabric walls in place, so those were cut and organized on the ground in wait for Halloween night. Pepper's Ghost and the Projected Light Ghosts needed to be taken down while not in use. This ensured that we would have plenty still to do even on Halloween Night.
